Some little ones suffer from food allergies, which cause an immune response to specific aggravating ingredients. The most common food allergy in the first year of life is cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA), which, depending on the level of severity, can be managed with extensively hydrolyzed hypoallergenic formula or amino acid-based formula. Many babies with CMPA also have a cross-over reaction to soy.

Beyond allergies, some babies have food intolerances. An intolerance doesn’t trigger an immune response like an allergy, but it does disrupt digestion. For instance, in cases of lactose intolerance, the body can’t fully break down lactose. However, this is a rare condition among infants.

It is essential to consult your pediatrician before switching your baby to an allergy-friendly formula. Proper guidance ensures your baby receives adequate nutrition and that any allergies or intolerances are correctly identified.

Types of Allergy-Friendly Formulas

There are several varieties of baby formula for allergies. Your pediatrician may recommend any of the following options after assessing your child’s unique feeding needs.

Hypoallergenic formulas:Contain broken-down milk proteins to facilitate digestion and reduce the risk of allergic reactions. These include extensively hydrolyzed options like HiPP HA and HiPP Comfort, and partially hydrolyzed options.

Amino acid-based formulas:Designed for infants with severe allergies or multiple food sensitivities. We do not currently offer this type of formula.

Soy-based formulas:Made with soy milk instead of animal milk for a dairy-free option. Only recommended under medical supervision for babies who cannot tolerate cow’s milk protein or those with lactose intolerance. We currently don’t carry this type of milk.

Lactose-reduced formulas:Useful for mild sensitivities to lactose, but not suitable in cases of diagnosed or suspected lactose intolerance. Options include HiPP Comfort.

Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right Baby Formula for Allergies

Selecting the best baby formula for allergies can feel overwhelming, but focusing on a few key factors can help you make a confident choice:

Allergy Type and Severity

See a healthcare professional to determine whether your baby has lactose sensitivity, cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA), or other dietary concerns. The severity of the allergy will determine whether you need a partially hydrolyzed formula, an extensively hydrolyzed option, or (in rare cases) an amino acid-based formula.

Protein Source and Processing

Hypoallergenic formulas break down proteins into smaller pieces to promote easier digestion. Partially hydrolyzed formulas are suitable for mild sensitivities, while extensively hydrolyzed formulas are recommended for babies at risk of or diagnosed with CMPA. The right formula can reduce the risk of allergic reactions and support comfortable digestion.

Age Suitability

Make sure to select a stage of formula that corresponds to your baby’s age to ensure the right balance of nutrients for their current phase of development.

Signs Your Baby May Need an Allergy-Friendly Formula

Parents should watch for potential signs of milk allergy or intolerance, including:

  • Frequent spit-up or vomiting
  • Persistent diarrhea or constipation
  • Excessive gas or bloating
  • Skin reactions like eczema or hives
  • Unexplained irritability during or after feeding

If you notice any of these symptoms, please consult your pediatrician before switching formulas.

How to Transition to a New Formula Safely

Always consult your pediatrician before making changes to your baby’s diet. Your baby’s doctor may recommend one of two options for switching formulas:

  1. Immediate Switch:A complete, immediate transition to the new milk may be necessary if your baby is switching formulas because of an allergy, intolerance, or health condition.

  2. Gradual Transition: In the absence of more serious health conditions, a slow transition may be preferable to give your little one’s digestive system more time to adjust to the new milk.

During the transition phase, monitor for any digestive changes or allergic reactions. Keep your pediatrician informed throughout the process to ensure your baby’s safety and nutritional needs are met.
